Located in a rural area in the far southwestern part of Burkina Faso, in the Cascades Region, the Sindou health district follows the territorial boundaries of the Léraba Province. The provincial and district capital, Sindou, is 50 km from the regional capital, Banfora, and 500 km from the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou. The district borders the Republic of Mali to the west and the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire to the south. The total population of the district was estimated in 2015 at 161,487 inhabitants spread across 8 municipalities, which are subdivided into 84 official villages/administrative sectors covering an area of 3,022 km². The settlement pattern is highly dispersed. In fact, in addition to the 84 official villages, there are 247 farming hamlets (settlements temporarily occupied during the rainy season from May to October).
