The French Red Cross has been providing care for acute malnutrition in the Tanout Health District since 2005, in response to the recurring food and nutrition crises that regularly affect Niger. The malnutrition treatment program implemented by the French Red Cross covers all 31 community health centers in the Tanout Health District.
In 2014, the French Red Cross conducted a SQUEAC survey in the Tanout Health District with technical support from the CMN (Coverage Monitoring Network). This survey revealed a current coverage rate of 47.6% (37%–58.1%). This is below the SPHERE standard of at least 50% coverage in rural areas. Recommendations were then made to all stakeholders to foster a genuine community-driven effort capable of positively impacting the coverage of the malnutrition management program in the Tanout area.
In November 2015, a SQUEAC survey conducted to assess changes in barriers and the impact of activities implemented following the previous SQUEAC survey indicated a current coverage rate of 37.3% (30.0%–45.1%), which is lower than that of 2014. It should be noted, however, that this difference is not statistically significant because the two intervals overlap.
