Protracted and acute conflicts, recurring natural disasters and chronic underdevelopment in Sudan will continue to affect the lives of approximately 4.2 million children in 2015, contributing to what is one of the worst crises for children in the world today. It is projected that the total number of people in need in 2015 will rise to over 7 million, from 6.1 million at the beginning of 20141. Limited access to treatment, food insecurity, high incidence of diarrheal diseases, and poor feeding practices have been long standing contributing factors to the high acute malnutrition rates in Greater Kordofan states. In addition to this, current instability and conflict is set to exacerbate the already high malnutrition rates in the two states of Kordofan, leading to a nutritional emergency. The SQUEAC was conducted in June-July 2015 by the State Ministry of Health with support from Save the Children Sweden. The survey covered 2 localities Algoz, and Dilling of South Kordofan. The objectives of SQUEAC were to evaluate the CMAM program in South Kordofan and build capacity in SQUEAC methodology so that the tool can be adopted and used to improve nutrition programs.
Findings from the assessment indicated a single coverage estimate of 40.1% (31.6 %-49.0%) in Urban area and point coverage estimate of 20.2% (13.6%-29.3%) in Rural areas of South Kordofan. This estimate lies below the Sphere standard of 70% in urban and 50% in rural program areas. The table below indicates a summary of the barriers to be overcome and recommendations in order to enhance program coverage in South Kordofan.
