SLEAC Report Assaba Region

In February 2016, the moughattas of Boumdeid, Guérou and Kankossa were surveyed to determine the respective classifications of their coverage for the management of severe acute malnutrition, in accordance with the SLEAC methodology. As the timing was not ideal for this type of investigation due to the low number of SAM cases, it was decided to continue the SLEAC investigations in the moughattas of Guérou and Kankossa and to carry out a comprehensive screening in the moughatta of Boumdeid. Difficulties arose regarding the available lists used to identify the villages within each health zone and their population figures. Village populations fluctuate greatly in this region, and it proved very difficult to obtain completely reliable lists for each moughatta, despite the efforts of the key contacts on these matters.

The investigations in Kankossa were unable to result in a coverage classification due to the insufficient number of children to achieve the desired sample size. Investigations in Guérou showed that this moughatta has a ‘moderate’ coverage classification with regard to the management of acute malnutrition. However, it was possible to classify moderate acute malnutrition for these two moughattas, resulting in a ‘low’ classification for the moughatta of Kankossa and a ‘moderate’ classification for the moughatta of Guérou.
