SLEAC and SQUEAC reports Kebbi state and Maiyama LGA, Kebbi,

Kebbi is a state in north-western Nigeria with a population of approximately 3.8 million people. Kebbi State is one of the five states in northern Nigeria implementing the WINNN (Working to Improve Nutrition in Northern Nigeria) project with focus in three LGAs namely Maiyama, Gwandu and Dandi. The WINNN partnership (ACF, Save the Children and UNICEF) has been supporting community based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) services since 2013 in the State.

Since the inception of CMAM program in Kebbi State in 2013, no program coverage has been done. WINNN partners therefore decided to conduct program coverage assessment to determine the level of met need in the areas of operation and to provide concrete recommendations in order to improve access and coverage of SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition) treatment.

SLEAC (Simplified LQAS Evaluation of Access and Coverage) methodology was used to classify coverage for each LGA, estimate overall coverage for the State and as a targeting tool for in-depth investigation and analysis in one LGA. SQUEAC (Semi Quantitative Evaluation of Access and Coverage) methodology was thereafter adopted to conduct in depth investigation and analysis of factors affecting coverage in one LGA. Dandi and Gwandu LGAs were classified as having high coverage where else Maiyama LGA was classified as having moderate coverage. The overall State estimate was at 42.0% (95% CI: 37.0% – 47.0%). This is below the SPHERE standards of above 50% for rural area. Chi Square test indicated that coverage was patchy across the LGAs.
